Daniel Becker, DDS
October 19th & 20th, 2007
"Essentials for Anxiolysis and Moderate Sedation"

Dr Becker received a BS in Zoology at Ohio University and his DDS from Ohio State University in 1972. He is currently Professor of Allied Health Sciences at Sinclair Community College and Associate Director of Education for the General Practice Dental Residency at Miami Valley Hospital, in Dayton. In addition to his academic responsibilities, Dr. Becker provides IV sedation services for dental practices throughout the Dayton-Cincinnati area. Dr. Becker has published numerous articles in scientific journals, authored chapters in several textbooks and is Co-editor of Management of Pain & Anxiety in the Dental Office. W.B. Saunders / Elsevier Science Pub, St. Louis, 2002. He has lectured for organizations, colleges and universities throughout North America on topics related to pharmacology, conscious sedation, medical assessment and medical emergencies. Dr. Becker is noted for his pragmatism and his ability to convert otherwise "dry"
material into formats that are both entertaining and informative.
Description: The scientific principles for the control of patient anxiety during dental treatment. Emphasis is placed on nitrous oxide and sedatives having proven safety and efficacy in controlling preoperative apprehension. Principles of preoperative assessment, monitoring, and management of complications will also be included in this two-day presentation.
Topics:
u Anxiolysis and Moderate Sedation in Perspective
u Preoperative Assessment
u General Principles of Pharmacology
u Local Anesthetics
u Sedatives and Anxiolytics
u Nitrous Oxide
u Patient Monitoring and Records
u Managing Complications
Objectives:
1. Distinguish anxiolysis, moderate versus deep sedation, and general anesthesia.
2. Describe significant aspects of preoperative assessment
3. Explain basic principles of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics.
4. Describe essential pharmacology of local anesthetics and vasoconstrictors.
5. Describe the pharmacology and appropriate use of various drug classes useful for providing anxiolysis and sedation, including differences in single drug versus multiple drug regimens.
6. Explain essential pharmacological features of nitrous oxide.
7. Describe appropriate monitoring of perfusion, ventilation and oxygenation
8. Identify key components of a sedation record and appropriate criteria for patient discharge.
9. Describe the recognition and treatment of complications.
